Sleeping Man SAved From Blaze

A MAN asleep in his flat was woken by the shop owner in the business below when he spotted smoke.

The shop owner dialled 999 before running upstairs to alert the 49-year-old man upstairs, who was asleep on the sofa in his lounge.

Firefighters called out to deal with the incident on Main Road, Darnall, at 11am on Tuesday, said a washing machine had caught fire.

Vandals start fire inside Burpham church

Hymn books and other items have been damaged in an arson attack inside a church in Surrey.  Vandals broke into the Church of the Holy Spirit in Burpham in the early hours of Saturday, after smashing a window in the door of the church hall.

Glandwr Industrial Estate Fire

Up to 70 firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a factory in Blaenau Gwent, which has forced the cancellation of train services.

The fire close to a railway line at Glandwr industrial estate near Aberbeeg started at around 01:00 BST.

Arriva Trains services between Ebbw Vale Parkway and Crosskeys have been replaced by buses.

A primary school has been closed to protect pupils from fumes and residents have been warned to close windows.

Arsonsits Responsible for Fire in Birkenhead

A fire investigation into a blaze which started on the seventh floor of a block of flats has been completed.

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called at 6.46pm on Sunday May 13 to Neston Gardens, near Beckwith Street, in Birkenhead on the Wirral. The fire was in the communal area on the seventh floor of the building.

Five fire engines were requested to help conduct a search of the block of flats to make sure all the occupants were safe. The fire was extinguished by 7.47pm. A woman was treated by paramedics for slight smoke inhalation but did not require hospital treatment…cont

Suspected Arson in Destroys Chris Lang’s Exhibition in Essex

An exhibition in tribute to an Essex artist who died recently has been severely damaged following a suspected arson attack on Sunday.  Several pieces of Chris Lang’s artwork were destroyed by flames that spread from a van parked outside the CoExist Gallery in North Road, Southend-on-Sea.

Arson Investigated at 2nd Sheffield Ski Village Fire in 48 hours

FIREFIGHTERS were called to Sheffield’s Ski Village again this morning – after another blaze broke out.  Crews were alerted to today’s blaze at the artificial ski resort on Vale Road, Parkwood Springs, at 5.15am.

They found a wooden control centre at the top of the ski slope engulfed in flames.  The blaze broke out just 48 hours after the main Alpine-style wooden building which housed the reception area, function rooms and bowling alley went up in flames…cont

Guests Evacuated From Falmouth Beach Hotel Fire

More than 100 firefighters tackled the blaze which broke out at the Falmouth Beach Hotel at Gyllyngvase just after 12:00 BST on Monday.

Guests, including Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, were moved to safety, but 12 guests – thought to have gone on day trips – were unaccounted for.  Nine have since made contact, but nothing has been heard from three.  Devon and Cornwall Police said there was nothing to suggest the guests had come to harm.

Sheffield Ski Village Blaze Destroys Site

INVESTIGATIONS were due to begin today after a massive blaze ripped through Sheffield Ski Village – turning the Alpine-style wooden complex into a mass of smouldering debris and twisted metal.

The inferno was so intense firefighters were not allowed inside the burning buildings when they arrived and the flames, which were shooting up to 40 feet into the air, could be seen for miles.

Leeds Arson Attacks under Investigation

Six people had to be evacuated from a Chinese takeaway in Leeds after a fire broke out in the premises.  Fire crews were called to the Eastern Ocean outlet, on Kirkstall Road, on Tuesday morning (24th April) after the alarm was raised at around 3.45am.

Fire Fighter Limit Arson Damage at Doncaster School Fire

YOBS who tried to burn down a Doncaster school failed after sharp-eyed firefighters spotted the blaze while attending another incident.

Their prompt action saved what could have been serious damage to Windhill Primary School at Mexborough, although the reception classroom has been put out of action.

“It could have been a lot worse,” said relieved headteacher, Jeanette Guy, yesterday.

Alfreton Takeaway Fire Closes King Street

FIREFIGHTERS spent over six hours tackling a blaze which gutted an Alfreton Chinese take away.  Around 25 crew members from Chesterfield, Alfreton, Ripley, Clay Cross and Crich were called out to the fire on King Street at 10.45am on Tuesday, April 24.

Llanelli Recycling Plant Fire

More than 200 tonnes of paper and plastic caught alight at the tin recycling plant in Llanelli on Saturday (21st April).

More than 20 firefighters from Gorseinon and Llanelli stations were called to AMG Resources factory in Nevills Dock, Seaside, reports the South Wales Evening Post.

Crews managed to bring the conflagration, which started at approximately 7pm, under control after two hours.

Station manager Nigel Gibbard told the news provider: “Our main concern was with the wind direction, the smoke was blowing over the town.

Factory Fires in Leicester Being Investigated

Fire and police investigators are continuing to probe fires at two factories in Leicester.

The former Corah factory on St John’s Street and a knitwear production factory on Frisby Road were both hit by fire on Saturday.

Matthew Cane from Leicestershire Fire Service said bringing the Frisby Road fire under control was “challenging” as it had spread rapidly to the roof.

Thousands Without Power After London Fire

Twelve fire engines were at the scene in Canning Town where a warehouse, pallet yard and scrapyard were alight.  The London Fire Brigade said there were no reports of injuries.  UK Power Networks said 88,000 customers were left without power because of the blaze in Ives Road, near Bidder Street.

It said all power supplies had been restored just over an hour later.  A spokesman said: “We apologise to customers in east London who suffered a power cut today when a fire in Canning Town, which was not on our equipment, damaged overhead power lines.”UK Power Networks engineers restored supplies to all customers within an hour and 10 minutes.”  He added: “Supplies were initially lost to 88,000 customers at 3.11pm.

“Power supplies to 19,000 customers were restored within three minutes, to another 38,000 customers by 3.34pm and to another 20,000 by 3.57pm, so 80,000 customers had power restored within 46 minutes.  “The final supplies were restored at 4.21pm and we are working with the emergency services on site.”

Fire station manager Jim Morford, who was at the scene of the blaze, said: “This is the second large fire to hit the capital in 24 hours.  “Several calls were received by the brigade’s control officers from members of the public who could see the huge plume of smoke rising from east London.”  The fire service was called at 3pm and the cause of the blaze was not yet known.

The service tweeted just before 6pm: “The large fire in Canning Town is now under control but our crews are likely to remain there for some time.”…cont

Ryde Castle Hotel Blaze During Wedding Reception

Nobody was hurt in the fire which is thought to have started on the roof of the building A hotel on the Isle of Wight has partially collapsed after a fire broke out during a wedding reception on Saturday night.

The Ryde Castle Hotel, in Ryde, was evacuated and six fire crews called just after 22:00 GMT. No-one was hurt. Fire investigators are trying to find out if a fireworks display during the wedding reception caused the blaze.

Thirty-seven people have been evacuated from a privately-run care home in Llanelli after a fire in its laundry.  Fire crews were called to the Llys y Coed Care Centre at 21:21 GMT on Wednesday.  Senior officers praised fire crews and staff at the home for quickly leading the residents to safety, saying it could have been more serious.  The fire is blamed on an industrial tumble drier which accidentally ignited. Birmingham Social Club Blaze Causes Commuter Problems

Commuters in Birmingham were facing delays on their way to work this morning (13th March) after a blaze at a social club. Fire crews were called to Redfort Social Club on High Street, Smethwick, just before 6am.  Around 15 firefighters attended the incident, which is believed to have been caused by a boiler located on the second floor of the building.

Historic Slovakian Castle Severely Damaged by Fire

An historic 14th Century castle was gutted in a fire sparked by children trying their first cigarette.

Police say two boys set fire to some tinder dry grass at the foot of the imposing Krasna Horka in eastern Slovakia after sneaking in to the castle grounds to experiment with smoking.

Jana Mesarova, police spokesman for the eastern Slovak region of Kosice, said: ‘A unit sent to the site found that two local boys aged 11 and 12 were trying to light up a cigarette and because of careless use of safety matches, they set grass at the castle hill on fire

Care home fire safety ‘horrifying’ in London

Dozens of care homes across London have been ordered to improve after failing to achieve even basic fire safety standards, a BBC investigation has learned.

After hospitals, firefighters consider care homes to present the single greatest risk to life of any public buildings. Residents are aften elderly, fragile or mentally ill.

But 29 care homes in the city have been discovered not reaching basic standards since 2010.
